Burton Cole’s books, Bash and the Pirate Pig, Bash and the Chicken Coop Caper, and Bash and the Chocolate Milk Cows are favorites at our house. The first time, I read them with my daughters aloud because I enjoy them too. Who doesn’t enjoy stories that make you laugh out loud? Then my daughters went on to read them each on their own.

During Bash and the Pirate Pig, we laughed our way through the book which we didn’t want to put down. While this book is fun, it also has an encouraging message: you can still learn a lot from a super crazy cousin.

When we read Bash and the Chicken Coop Caper, my girls praised this book saying it was even funnier than the first. We also enjoyed the boys’ perseverance as they worked through trying to help their sad friend. The humor lightened up a tough situation without taking away from the serious, real feelings of loss. The fruit of the spirit theme was fresh and original. Young readers can see the trouble coming and wonder how the boys are going to work their way out of this jam. Skating pigs. A mysterious stranger in the chicken coop. Super sleds flying off chicken coops. Frogs in the cookies. Underwear catapults. Starting wars to make peace. Building castles out of hay. All stuff kids will delight in.

Bash and Beamer continued to make us smile, chuckle, and shake our heads in Bash and the Chocolate Milk Cows. Watching these two get into scrapes and learn important lessons in a fun way is one reason we give it a thumbs up. The April Fool’s Day theme is full of surprises. The second is that this series is especially entertaining. We also like the rural setting as we are rural people. I especially appreciate Cole’s descriptions. I admire how Cole comes up with these ideas that are perfect for kids this age and for those who are still kids at heart.

My girls and I loved these books and highly recommend them. We are looking forward to reading more about Bash and Beamer and their wild adventures. They have quite the imaginations.

I’m excited about finding a series that my kids enjoy because I’m always searching for good books for them to encourage the love of reading. Kids who love to read will leap right into these books. Kids who are reluctant readers may find that reading is a lot of fun. I have one of each so I’m very pleased to see the latter falling in love with books.

Thank you, Mr. Cole, for giving our kids a refreshing way to look at how to live out one’s faith and make the world a better place. I look forward to more from this author.
